Utah's New Area Code

Utah continues to grow and as it does so we need more phone numbers. Around 1998 Qwest introduced that the Salt Lake/Provo/Ogden areas would maintain the 801 area code, while the rest of the state would convert to a 435 area code.

The Salt Lake metropolitan area has grown more still, and Qwest is now implementing a new area code, 385. This new area code will act as an "overlay" of the 801 area code.

What this means is that anyone within the 801 area code, beginning March 1st, will be required to dial 10 digits to reach local numbers, even calling next door. The "1" preceding the number will not be necessary. As of right now, those living in the 801 area code can already dial this way.

What does this mean to those of us in the 435 area code? Not a whole lot other than there is a new in–state area code to be aware of. If you have special long distance routing programmed in your phone system consider having us check it to ensure you won't be overbilled for calling this new area code.
